Advertising continues to be used to stimulate demand for the product but the methods for doing so have become so much more advanced. Advertising is used to ultimately increase sales of a product or service. Although this may be the purpose of a company's marketing activities, advertising should only be used to meet specific marketing objectives.

Advertising is a marketing tool that is ideal if you are aiming to create, strengthen or change the brand image because it can position your brand, visually and aurally, adjacent to the personality that fit with your product offerings and appeal to your target audience; such as sensitivity, courage or humor.

Apart from strengthening or changing the brand image, the other main purpose of advertising is to enhance the corporate image of the company to persuade the target audience that the company is reliable and has a good reputation. Companies like BP often try to use the ad for this purpose by projecting images that distract from the main purpose of their activities.
The most common reason for using advertising is to increase brand awareness, to position and keep the brand at the top of the minds of their consumers. Consumers tend not to buy from a company unless they had heard about them and respect them. Advertisement achieve this by reaching a large audience, positioning and targeting the brand so that consumers are fully aware of the brand.
